Awhile back, a friend sent me on a mission to find the best handbag for work and every day use, an impossible task since every one knows the best handbag is the one you don’t have yet.
I didn’t think I owned the perfect handbag yet, but it turns out I was wrong. After carrying it everyday this week, I think the Cole Haan Hyde Park Messenger Bag is the one.
The outside is smooth leather. Mine is the purple one on the right. It’s got magnetic closures on the front and back pockets which I find especially useful for easy access to my phone or Metrocard. You get versatility with the adjustable cross body strap and a shoulder strap. With a 5.5 inch drop, the strap fits comfortably over my shoulder even when I’m wearing my bulky winter coat.
The sturdy nylon interior is broken up into three compartments. The back compartment has a zip pocket, the front has 2 small pockets for a cell phone, and middle compartment is just wide enough for my 13” MacBook. The three compartments mean I can store all my gadgets without them scratching and scuffing each other.
At 10 inches high, finding keys and other small items is a breeze. No digging or handbag shaking necessary.
It’s not fussy. It’s sturdy. I don’t have to worry about it getting ruined in the rain. It’s got the right combination of good styling and pure function. And since I bought it on Gilt, I didn’t spend a mint.
Finally, a gift guide that actually doesn’t suck. Rare beer of the month club? I think I know someone who might like that in his Christmas stocking.
